Book Review #2

Now that the holiday season chaos is behind us.  One of my favorite things to do in the winter is to lose myself in the pages of a book.  There’s nothing quite like wearing your comfy jammies, grabbing a yummy treat, and reading.  Anyone else?

That said, it’s been a while since my last book review, and I’ve had this post sitting in my drafts for quite some time waiting to be finished.  So, I figured it’s finally time I sat down and share my second book review with you all.

Let’s go!

Open Book – Jessica Simpson

Open Book Photo

Reading Open Book is like catching up with an old friend. This book is so honest, entertaining, inspiring, and even a little heartbreaking.  Through her writing you can feel her emotion and I found myself drawn to her story.  I couldn’t put it down and I read Open Book whenever I had a spare minute to do so.   From her childhood to her marriages, to her weight and alcohol addiction, Jessica holds nothing back.  She lets you in on the good, the bad and the ugly. All in all, make sure to add this book on your reading list.

Altar of Eden – James Rollins

I am a big fan of James Rollins and I have read almost every book he has written.  This book, like his others does not disappoint.  Beautifully crafted – Altar of Eden is a science thriller and was a thoroughly enjoyable read.  He keeps his chapters short and paragraphs to the point which makes the pacing of this book incredibly fast.  I also thought that Rollins did a great job of sprinkling details about genetic engineering into the storyline – adding enough description that’s easy to follow but not too much that the reader can’t understand it.  Overall, a good read as well as an informative one.

The Other Woman – Sandie Jones

Book Review #2 The Other Woman Photo

I had finished this book ages ago but now just getting to put down my thoughts on paper.  To be honest, I really struggled with rating this one.  The Other Woman was not at all what I expected.  The book seemed interesting at first then quickly became incredibly frustrating.  I did want to enjoy it, but I just wasn’t connecting to the story and characters. All in all, this one wasn’t completely horrible, but it wasn’t great either.

The Hating Game – Sally Thorne

Book Review #2 The Hating Game Photo

While I cannot say that I was hooked straight from the very beginning with The Hating Game, it wasn’t long before I was pulled into the story.  The plot is both relatable and addictive. In fact, so much so that the more I read, the more I wanted to know about Lucy and Josh.  The tension between them was great, and I loved seeing their relationship grow.  What’s more, their banter was witty and funny.  Believe me when I say, it will make you laugh and cry.  So good, 10/10 recommend!

The Royal We – Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan

The Royal We Book Photo

I read this book on a whim because there was so much hype about it.  I don’t normally go crazy for the Royal family, so I really didn’t know what to expect going in.  While I fell in love with Bex and Nick’s family and friends especially Nick’s younger brother, Freddie, there were parts of the book that dragged on and felt a little choppy.  I am probably in the minority but I struggled to finish reading this book.

The Silent Patient – Alex Michaelides

Book Review #2 The Silent Patient

I’ve posted this book before to my Instagram feed earlier last year, but it deserves another mention.  A deep, dark tale of murder, love and revenge.  The Silent Patient grabbed me from the very beginning and found it to be quite the page-turner.  It was full of twists and turns and nothing in this book was ever quite it seemed.  Just when I thought I had things figured out, I could have not been more wrong and then the ending.  I did not see it coming but wow, does this book deliver! It’s one of those books that stay with you long after the last page is read.  Bottom line, whether you are a fan of thrillers or not, you will enjoy reading this book.

Have you read any of these books? If so, what were your thoughts?

I have read the Silent Patient (loved it). I read Open Book and really enjoyed hearing about her life and the nitty gritty. I think I read the Other Woman, but I can’t remember.

I read Open Book at the start of last year and it was just as you described it, “like catching up with an old friend.” Loved it and it made me appreciate JS so much more and also think about all the sterotypes that were created about her intelligence via social media. Anyway, I am adding the Hating Game to Goodreads right now and I like that you include honest reviews so I can choose wisely. Are you back on IG? You mentioned it this post but I wasn’t sure.

The only one I can remember reading is The Other Woman and even that I only have a vague recollection. I’ve heard so many great things about The Silent Patient though that I know I need to add it to my list!

I love to read, too—never seem to have enough time, though! 🙂 The first one in your list about Jessica Simpson sounds good—I like reading real life stories, so I would probably like that one the best. I also like reading the classics! I really need to try to make more time for reading! 🙂
