DIY Cardboard French Fry Halloween Costume

When it comes to classic food duos – fish and chips, peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti and meatballs, and of course, burgers and fries – are a few of the pairings that come to mind.  So, my foodie loving heart couldn’t be more excited that my son wanted to be a hamburger for Halloween because that meant I get to be his trusty sidekick! #hellomrpotato

Last week, I did a how-to post on how we made a hamburger costume out of a cardboard box and today, I am excited to share Part II of our 3-part food themed costume series.  And this post is all about how to recreate this cardboard box into a French fry Halloween costume.  #morethanabox

But before we get started, I wanted to mention that we used a lot of the same method from the hamburger tutorial to create the French fry costume.  So, if you see a double asterisk next to a particular step make sure to refer to Part I of this series for my notes and tips.

That said, here we go!

Step 1: Gather materials

Large cardboard box

Scissors

Box cutter

1 can of red spray paint

Glue gun

Glue sticks

1 can of black paint

Foam pad

Paintbrush

Cobwebs

Plush Spider

Step 2: Draw the fry box**

To start, you will need one large cardboard box.  Next, you need to measure yourself against the cardboard box to determine the length and width of the opening for where you will stand inside.  Then, to create the French fry container, you’ll need to draw out the front, back, and two sides.  After that, create a curve along the top of the front piece as well as the two sides for your arms.

Step 3: Cut

Subsequently, cut out your fry box using scissors or a box cutter.

Step 4: Paint

Following that, it’s time to spray paint!

Make sure you are in a well-ventilated area and give each cardboard piece at least two coats.  Then, set aside and let the paint dry completely.

Repeat with the other side.

Step 5: Create the fries

From there, while you wait for the French fry box to dry, you’ll need to create your fries.  I used a white foam board* and hand painted it black.

(*Side note: This part is the most time-consuming part of this DIY cardboard French fry Halloween costume since you’ll need to paint the entire foam board black.  While I did not mind doing this, I have to admit it wasn’t a very efficient use of time.  So, my suggestion is to just buy a black foam board.  That way you don’t have to go through the additional step of painting the fries!).

Once the paint is dry, cut out your foam board into the shape of fries.  To do this, cut the foam into 2-inch strips.  Make sure to cut some of the strips in shorter sizes as well.

Step 6: Assemble the costume

When you have all the parts cut-out and painted, it’s time to assemble your DIY cardboard French fry Halloween costume.  And for these next few steps, all you are going to do is to glue everything in place with a hot glue gun.

First, hot glue the four pieces of the fry cardboard together to form a box shape that’s open on the top and bottom.

Next, slip the box over your head and add the straps**.

Then, hot glue the French fry strips to the inside of the container.  Don’t forget to stagger the fries in different directions for a more realistic look.

Afterwards, add cobwebs** to the fry box and fries.

Lastly, don’t forget to add a big mama spider on the front of the French fry box.

And that’s it! You’re done.  #easypeasy
