Maine Travel Diary Part Two

Today, I am back to wrap up my family’s adventures in Maine and we are kicking things off with day 3.

Let’s go!

Day 3 – Railway Village Museum

The following day was all about our little train engineer!

For those of you that don’t know, my son is obsessed with trains.  He frequently talks about becoming a train engineer when he grows up.  So, for his 10th birthday, I thought it would be fitting to let him be a train engineer for a day to mark the occasion, and the Railway Village Museum in Boothbay checked all the boxes.  We ended up spending an entire day there so if you want a full breakdown of our experience, I shared all the details in a separate post.

But to summarize, from Old Port to Boothbay, it is about a 90-minute drive.  So, our plan was to wake up bright and early on Friday morning and leave at 4:30 am to get to the Railway Village Museum by 6 am!

Upon arrival, we were met by John Orne, their Chief Train Engineer at the back shed with our ride for the day – a 10-ton Henschel steam locomotive built in 1938.  After that, he wasted no time putting our little train engineer to work whom I might add was more than happy to oblige! He was definitely in his element, and I loved that John went above and beyond to make his special day even more one of a kind.

And if that wasn’t enough, we have been to several train museums throughout the years, and hands down, this is one of my favorites.  With 35-acre of living history, they have a lot of different exhibits to explore like the Town Hall, the Farm Equipment Shed, the General Store, the Car Barn and so much more.  It truly is a beautiful place to walk through and experience.

All in all, I am happy to report that my son’s special day was nothing short of amazing! We had the best time, and most importantly, our train engineer had so much fun.  Seeing the smile on his face made it all worth it.  Needless to say, it was the perfect birthday present!

Day 4 – Maine Day Ventures & Pai Men Miyake

Before we get to what we did the next day, a quick backstory…

…long ago, when my husband frequently traveled for work, I would tag along for a couple of days and one of my favorite ways of exploring a city was through a walking food tour.  The first one I went to was in Boston.  Since then, I’ve done a food tour in San Francisco, Vancouver, and North Carolina.  Not only is it a great way to indulge in some amazing eats, but you also discover spots that’s not on your radar.  So, when I was putting together our family’s Maine trip itinerary, I knew that it had to include a food tour.

That said, we did the Old Port Culinary Walking Tour and enjoyed an afternoon with Maine Day Ventures.  Our day started at Andy’s Old Port Pub where we met, Ray, our tour guide.  While we ate or along the walk, he provided interesting tidbits about the restaurants and area.  The tour was approximately 3 hours long at a leisurely pace, and in total, we visited four different places.  We got to try fish tacos, clam chowder, and of course, lobster roll!

Overall, I was impressed with Ray’s wealth of knowledge, and had it been only a city tour I would say A+.  But to be candid, this particular food tour fell short for me for a couple of reasons.  For one, there was a lot of down time between each meal, and it felt a little stretched out.  For another, I wasn’t blown away with the food we did get to try.  Given that we’ve already eaten a few different meals in Maine prior to our tour, I felt that the food we tried didn’t really highlight Maine’s delicious food scene and it tasted a bit meh to me.  Despite that, if it’s your first time in Maine, I would still recommend looking into a walking food tour because you learn and see so much.

After our food tour, we leisurely strolled by local shops on our way back to our hotel and stopped in Gorgeous Gelato to get a couple of scoops.  I was craving something sweet, and it seemed like the perfect fix! Once we got back to our room, we enjoyed a lazy couple of hours before dinner.

Speaking of which, for dinner, we decided to try Pai Men Miyake that came highly recommended by Ray and what a great spot it was! The service was incredible, and the food was oh-so-good! Seriously, everything we ordered was beyond delicious and to this day, I am still thinking about it! #moreplease

With bellies full, we went back to our hotel, changed into our pjs, turned on the tube for some mindless TV before calling it a night.

Day 5 – North 43 Bistro & Allagash Brewery

And that brings us to our last day full day in Maine which started off at the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Co. & Museum for a scenic train ride.  We opted for “first class” seating and it came with free snacks! It’s the little things, right?

As for the train ride, it didn’t go very far, was short, and nothing epic.  But to experience it with my family was worth it.

Following our train ride, we stopped in for lunch at North 43 Bistro.  This is an upscale waterfront restaurant with unbeatable views.  But beyond the stunning backdrop, the food was equally incredible and generously portioned.  The beef sandwich I had was absolutely delicious and it came with fries that was perfectly crunchy and seasoned.  If you are looking for a delicious spot to dine with a view, you can’t go wrong here!

Afterward, my dad and the hubby wanted to grab beer so, we decided to head to Allagash Brewery to spend the remainder of the afternoon.  The hubby and I had visited years ago.  In 2011 to be exact and my oh my, it’s amazing to see how much it’s grown and changed in a good way.  They now have a ton of outdoor seating and a had a food truck on-site which was a nice perk.  So, even though, we just ate lunch, we couldn’t resist getting a few shareable items including a whoopie pie, pretzels, and cole slaw.  It’s a great place to relax, eat, and people watch.  I would go back in a heartbeat.

From there, we chose to lay low, traveled back to the hotel, and enjoyed a night in.

Day 6

We had a few hours to kill before our flight back to California the next morning so, there was no rush getting to the airport.  Instead, we chose to spend our last morning in Maine lounging about in our rooms before heading back to Luke’s Lobster for lunch.  If you remember, this was our first dinner spot in town, and it was just as yummy as the first time.

And, before we knew it, it was time to head home.
