An Ode to the Alexander Wang Mini Rockie Bag

Last month was my birthday month.  For the past 12 years, I’ve always celebrated my birthday month doing things that make me happy.  It could be as simple as treating myself to my favorite cup of coffee to as fancy as splurging on a new bag or small luxury goods (slg).  But 2020 was a little different.  While I did treat myself to a few items like this grey combat boots and mini bicycle flower stand, I did not splurge on a new bag, or slg.  Instead I shopped my closet and pulled my favorite bag from my collection for a fun day at home to commemorate the occasion.  And chances are, you might have seen her already in a previous outfit post, or recently on my Instagram.  Nonetheless, it’s time for an ode to this beautiful closet workhorse, my Alexander Wang Mini Rockie Bag.  So, without further ado, I am breaking it down for you and sharing my full review including how it’s has held up.

Let’s get started…

Why I bought this bag

A lot of women look to Louis Vuitton for their first designer bag and I was no exception.  I always wanted a handbag from LV, and a Speedy seemed like a good choice.  I really love the style and it had been on my wish list for years.  So, when I finally graduated college, I decided to treat myself and purchase the LV Speedy 25.  Unfortunately, my story did not have a happy ending.  Even though I wanted the Speedy 25, I found out that the bag was just too big for me and the top hand-held makes the bag so impractical.  I left the store empty handed.

Fast forward to 2014, that’s when I first laid eyes on Alexander Wang Mini Rockie.  I knew I had to have it and I stalked it for quite some time.  When I found this one discounted on Fashionphile three years later, I decided to pull the trigger.  Once I received the bag, it quickly became one of my top favorite bags in my collection.

Size

Despite its relatively compact appearance, this bag can hold a lot of things.  It is honestly the perfect size.  Not too big, not too small – it fits everything I need as well as my DSLR.  Inside, the interior is lined with a black fabric and there is one large compartment with two interior pockets (one open and one zipped).  Furthermore, there’s also a hidden mini exterior side pocket.  Not much can fit in here, except for possibly a lip liner and metro card.

For reference, the AW Mini Rockie Bag measures at 8” W x 5” H x 6” D.

Functionality

In terms of functionality, the bag is extremely versatile.  It’s a classic duffel style bag with a zipper closure so it offers peace of mind as the bag stays shut.  In addition, the Alexander Wang Mini Rockie comes with an adjustable and detachable strap that can be worn crossbody or on your shoulder.  Alternatively, you can also completely detach the long strap and carry the bag as a top handle or on your forearm.  I wear it all four ways depending on the occasion and really appreciate having these different options.

Another great feature of this bag are the small studs on the bottom of the bag.  Not only does the panel of studs immediately enhance any outfit but I love that it protects the leather base of the bag when you set it down.

Color

With regards to color, it all comes down to your own personal preference.  The AW Mini Rockie comes in a variety of colors such as black, red, or dark green and it was tough to pick one.  Initially, I wanted the black with nickel hardware because it’s safe, neutral and familiar.  In the end, since I gravitate toward neutral outfits, the color and style I chose is called matte oxblood.  It is simply beautiful! Don’t you agree?

Durability

As far as durability goes, the bag is well made.  It is constructed from pebbled calfskin leather and I love that it’s relatively low maintenance.  Since I got the bag, it has been on constant rotation.  I have taken it everywhere, including parks, grocery stores, birthday parties, domestic and international travel.  It’s even been rained and spilled on! Apart, from a few tiny little scratches on the metal clasp on the strap and the base studs, my bag still looks brand new.

In addition, one of my favorite things about this bag is how understated it is.  I appreciate it isn’t emblazoned in flashy logos, and instead appears as a somewhat anonymous handbag.  Aside from the words Alexander Wang etched in the metal clasp of the crossbody strap as well as a small leather tag on the inside, there’s nothing suggesting that it’s a designer bag.  A quality, I believe, that adds to the longevity of the bag.

Drawbacks

Honestly, there’s not much I don’t love about this bag.  But for the sake of transparency, I will address a few things that may be bothersome for you.

The first being, the weight.  The bag is made to be sturdy therefore, the thick leather and base studs can add weight.  However, these things are to be expected for a well-made bag.  To be honest, I would say it’s all relative.  People have different taste and there will always be a feature(s) of a bag that may not meet a need.  That said, despite the base of the bag lined with studs, it has not bothered me.

Secondly, the zipper closure can be tricky to close one-handed.  Generally, it requires you to use both hands to get in the right position to close the bag.  As a result, sometimes it takes an extra second or two and may not be optimal if you are in a rush.  This isn’t a big issue for me at all as I usually don’t zip up my bags anyway.

Lastly, these bags are no longer in production.  Depending on your perspective, this can be a good or a bad thing.  In my opinion, it’s a good thing because the bag will be much rarer now and if you are like me, my preference actually is to not be carrying something everyone else has.

Final Thoughts

All in all, it’s been a little over three years since I purchased my Alexander Wang Mini Rockie Bag and this bag still makes my heart skip a beat.  I love that it’s different than anything I have in my collection.  It’s timeless, absolutely goes with everything, and the stud accents on the bottom give the bag a very bold unique look.  Hands down, it’s one of the best bags I will ever own.

While these bags have been discontinued, the good news is the bag is still freely available on the pre-loved market like Fashionphile, Bag, Borrow or Steal and The RealReal.  So, if you are eyeing this bag, I’d grab one while you still can.  Also, if you are interested in learning more about my experience buying designer bags second hand, let me know, I’d be happy to share my thoughts on this topic.

Congratulations after finally getting what you wished for. Bummer it did not pan out after graduation. I know what you mean when taking about weight. I got a lovely Michael Kors which is quite big AND heavy. I mean really heavy ..hahha.

This is such a cute bag! I really see myself with the red one and I love the studs on the bottom. I also agree with you in that I prefer to have bags that are unique and not so popular. Also simplicity is key for me! Great review and thanks for sharing! My husband was watching as I looked through the red bag so maybe he will be hinted and purchase me it. lol

That was a great read. I love that mini rookie bag. For the past 3 years, I started buying gifts and it feels great! As I’m getting older I tend to buy myself more meaningful gifts.

What a good, comprehensive review. (Your photos are stunning, too!). I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bag with studs all over the bottom like that, what a great designer feature. I love it when you can use bags for years and never tire of them, what a great investment, Maureen.

It’s a cute bag! I had the Rocco but it was just FAR too heavy for me – and I was used to Chloe bags which aren’t the lightest! I ended up selling it, although I regret it sometimes as the leather and colour were amazing! I just need lighter bags!

Thanks so much for joining the #WeekdayWearLinkup! Hope that you had a great weekend 🙂 We managed to spend a lot of time outdoors which was fun 🙂

I admire your discernment! It’s so easy to get caught up in wanting something so badly and not really thinking it through but you did and ended up with a great bag. I always tease my husband about getting me a designer bag – he could not believe how much a LV bag was when I told him the cost! Ha!! Needless to say I’ll be buying my own designer bag!!!

This looks like a great bag! I really do love the color, I like that it’s a little bit more fun than basic black or brown but it still will go with so many colors!

Now that is a fabulous bag! I love the deep, rich color and those fun studs on the bottom! I tend to splurge on bags (when I actually splurge) since they last so long! It is definitely an item that will be in your closet for years and years!

How did I miss your birthday! Happy belated birthday! I hope you were able to make it special in your own way, with the people you love. It’s been a tough go for everyone but it’s the little things that matter, and that little bike stand is soooooo cute. So, I don’t really have any special bags, well my Kate Spade purse is probably the only one that was something I truly desired and in the end it wasn’t even that much, but I love it. I think a special treat, whatever that is to the person, is a great way to feel spoiled but also we tend to care for it and use it for years to come so in the end it actually often becomes one of the best buys rather than spending money on lots of cheaper items or things we only sort of like.
