With spring break upon us, I thought this would be the perfect time for a book review and share some of the books that I’ve read recently. So, whether you’re heading to a tropical paradise or just enjoying a relaxing week at home, these books are definitely worth considering. But even if you don’t go anywhere, it never hurts to have a good book handy.
Let’s kick things off with…
Out of all the Lisa Jewells book I’ve read so far, The Night She Disappeared is my favorite. It is a slow burn mystery about a young’s couple disappearance that is well-written with characters that are relatable. I also think that the author does a fantastic job setting the scene and building suspense just enough so that readers will want to continue turning pages. I sure did, and I enjoyed how the story unfolded.
The Accident was a book that I was excited about but unfortunately, did not work for me. The story seemed interesting at first then quickly became incredibly frustrating. I did want to enjoy it, but I just wasn’t connecting to the storyline and characters. The main character was a bit of a train wreck and not the smart, witty individual that she claims to be. It was difficult to relate to her and I kept questioning her choices. So, while there were some decent twists and turns along the way, overall, I did not like this book.

In contrast, everything about The Night Swim was so good! It is such a well-written book with short chapters, strong characters, and a plot that is captivating. The story follows a present-day rape trial, and a mysterious death that happened twenty-five years ago. It’s one that certainly gets under your skin and totally consumes you as it shows you how vicious people can sometimes be. It kept me on my toes, and I couldn’t wait to get to the end. Speaking of which, I thought the twist at the end was clever and unpredictable. Wow!

After reading The Night Swim, I wanted something fun and light to read. So, I picked up Book Lovers by Emily Henry and this is the second book I’ve read by this author. Spoiler alert: it did not disappoint! It’s an enemies to lovers trope and the banter between characters was zappy and zingy. And if that wasn’t enough, the storyline is charming with a great ending to boot. In fact, I enjoyed it so much so that I was not fully prepared for just how much I was going to love it. I smiled, I cried, and I did not want it to end. No, seriously…

…as a result, I read another enemies to lovers trope book, The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren, and in my opinion, it was the perfect novel to read after Book Lovers. That’s because, it is a fun, fast-paced piece with characters that are absolutely lovable and banter that is equally fantastic which made this book a breeze to read and hard to put down. I am not a fast reader by any means and usually take a few weeks to finish a book. Longer, if my interest wanes. But since I was so engaged in the storyline, I just kept flipping the pages and got through this in a little over four days. Two big thumbs up!

Then it was time for another psychological thriller, and I chose The Things We Do in the Dark by Jennifer Hillier. This is a dark and heart wrenching tale that is full of twists and turns, many unexpected. The story alternates between present and past timelines and is told in six different parts. Each part contained POVs from the different characters and I loved how that author weaves it altogether to tell the tale of a young girl doing whatever it takes to survive. Overall, I thought this is a well-written piece that is easy to follow especially given the complex topics included in this novel – child abuse, rape, sexual assault, and murder.

Now it’s your turn! What book have you read recently?

I laughed at “not the smart, witty individual that she claims to be” about the main character in The Accident because that kind of mismatch can ruin a thriller fast. Sometimes one frustrating narrator is enough to make a whole book feel like work.

You picked 6 books that are as varied as they are engaging. From fun to intriguing to psychological thriller, you covered a few themes in the fiction genre. I’m glad you enjoyed each book because sometimes we pick books that have promise but disappoint us.

The Night She Disappeared is a great book. I finished reading it a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. I still have Book Lovers on my TBR list, and I’m happy to hear that it didn’t disappoint. Looking forward to reading it next.

That Lisa Jewell mystery is one I keep seeing on my feed lately. I usually avoid those frustrating main characters too because they just ruin the suspense. Having a few books ready for a quiet week is perfect.

I do love a good mystery but haven’t had the opportunity to read one in quite a while. The Night She Disappeared sounds like a really intriguing book and one that I would certainly consider. I love that the characters are relatable and that the story draws the reader in.

The Unhoneymooners sounds like a good one. Especially since you had a hard time putting it down. I have not read a book in probably 10 years. I do not have the time. I used to when I was on vacation, on the plane, or at the beach. Guess I need a vaca. too!!

You’re reminding me yet again that I really need to get into reading more! I used to be such a bookworm, but then got so busy. However, The Night Swim sounds like a novel I’d love to read, and I’ll definitely be downloading it on my Kindle next for some bedtime winding down time.
