Giving Thanks and 3 Thanksgiving Outfit Ideas

2020 has been a hot mess.  It has been a year of fear and overwhelming uncertainty.  Each day since the pandemic started, it seemed to go from bad to worse.  In these trying times, it is so easy to feel defeated.  This Thanksgiving many of us are facing different challenges and it’s fair to say that it may be hard to feel thankful right now.  So, today, I decided that it would be a good time to share this post I have been thinking about for quite some time.

I don’t know what trials you may be facing right now but when doubts and fears overwhelm, I turn to God.  Instead of dwelling on the things I cannot change, I remind myself we have a big God and focus on being thankful.  When I do this, I am quickly reminded that no matter what comes my way or what season of life I am currently in, I remember all things are possible with Him.  Through this, I have learned that I can’t control the problems that come in my life, but by choosing to thank God, I can control how I respond.

God won’t always reveal His plan to you, and it can feel like God has let you down.  But no matter how much you don’t understand life as it is right now, trust that He has something better.  Even if you can’t feel it or see it, God is always working in your life.  I say all this because whether you are facing challenges in your job, your health, or your family, don’t allow your circumstances to steal your joy and dictate your situation.  Instead, look to God and focus your mind on all the little things that make you smile along the way.  Because even in the midst of all the chaos that is around us, there’s something to be thankful for and blessings to count.

That said, it’s been awhile since I’ve done an outfit post.  Considering, Thanksgiving is only 10 days away, I thought it would be fun to share different outfit ideas that would be great at any Thanksgiving festivities.  Our family gatherings are pretty low key – we stay in, eat and hangout.  So, for me, it’s all about comfy and cozy clothes.  With that in mind, here are three looks that not only look chic and comfortable, but these are outfits you can easily replicate with items already in your closet.  In case you are in the market or missing some pieces, I did link to some very similar and affordable options.

Let’s dive in!

Outfit #1 – Sweater Dress + Combat Boots

If you are wanting to dress up this Thanksgiving, a simple sweater dress is always a great option.  It is the perfect mix of comfort and style.  Add some boots, your favorite bag and you are set!

Outfit #2 – Romper + Cardigan

When in doubt, you can never go wrong with a classic cardigan and romper combo.  They are perfect worn separately, but together they are a match made in heaven.  This is a great Thanksgiving outfit, if it’s not very cold and if you want to look dressy – without going overboard.  Add a pair of ankle boots and you’ve got a nice holiday outfit.

Outfit # 3 – Poncho + High Waisted Jeans

Sometimes you just want a giant oversized blanked to curl up in and that’s where ponchos come in.  Not only is a poncho cozy and comfortable, but they are also very forgiving which makes them perfect for any Thanksgiving feasts! I paired my sweater with my favorite dark wash jeans, but you can swap out the jeans with leggings.  If you are not feeling like wearing sneakers, slip on a pair of heeled booties for a more-dressy look.

Tell me, what do you usually wear for Thanksgiving? Do you like to dress up, or keep it casual?

If I am hosting it, I like to be on the casual side. If another family member is hosting it, I try to dress up a bit. Any reason to dress up these days is fun. This year it was just me, my husband and son so it was super casual. Like all your looks 🙂

Loving your Thanksgiving looks, babe! And I’ve been loving the combat boot trend so I am definitely breaking mine out soon!

This is such a wonderful reminder! I too take so much comfort in knowing what a loving God we serve. I’m reminded all the time that when we take the time to look for Him he is really everywhere and working so hard to fill our lives with JOY! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I always love the cozy vibe for Thanksgiving. My mom however, always has us dress up, so I’ll be content with putting on the cozy things after everyone leaves…haha.

Ah yes 2020 was an awful year. The worst of my adult life. I lost my mom last month. She had cancer but her death still happened super fast. Just a terrible year. On a more cheerful note you look great in all of these looks. And yes good to give thanks and lets hope 2021 is better then 2020

Hello Maureen. I’m new to your blog and love these casual looks! I agree that ponchos are irresistible, especially since I’m from Canada and they come in handy in the winter months! I love dressing up for Thanksgiving, but after the meal, I like changing into a casual outfit, its kind of a family tradition 🙂 Lovely post!

    Take care,

It’s so important to give thanks, even when there’s so much difficulty. Maybe especially when there’s so much difficulty. Thank you for this reminder to turn to God. It makes all the difference. These are cute outfits too. I love the poncho! Have a great weekend Maureen!

Maureen, this is such a beautiful and important message. I think we all need these little reminders to shift our perspective back to a more positive place. It is so easy to fall into negativity these days. I am loving all of your Thanksgiving outfit ideas. I will be all cozy and warm in some kind of oversized sweater outfit this Thanksgiving! Thanks for linking with me, my friend.

Since it is just us, I will probably end up in a sweater and jeans, but I am loving your sweater dress and combat boots outfit! I think I need to recreate that next time I actually am able to get out of the house for a date night!

  25. Kellyann Rohr | 18th Nov 20

Maureen, you are so right! In times of uncertainty and fear about the future we need to remember who is in control! It is easy to get down but if we look close enough, we still have so much to be thankful for!
I love your Thanksgiving outfits – I am such a sucker for combat boots these days, especially with dresses!
Wishing you and your sweet family all the very best!!

I really needed to read this today, thank you so much for posting it. Life seems to be in free fall sometimes, not just with Covid, but with everything else life has to throw at us at the same time. I trust in Him and know I’m exactly where I need to be at this moment. And you’re right – there’s ALWAYS something to be thankful for. P.S, I know that exact spot in Solvang in your last picture 🙂 Gosh I miss traveling!! xo

I love all of your outfits equally so I can’t even choose a favorite, although I definitely can’t wear the roper currently as it’s cold and we have a significant amount of snow, lol. I am such a lover of all things comfort and I love how you paired your sweater dress with combat like boots. My youngest just got a pair and since she is size 7 I may be able to borrow hers and do a copy of this outfit.

I am with you about 2020. I try really hard to find the good and I even wrote a post not long ago on all the things that I have observed that have been positive. But now that a long winter is looming and our cases have suddenly gone from less than 20 daily to well over a 100, I am actually worried about all of our mental health, peoples addictions, and our hospitals getting overran by patients. It feels scary once again.

Stay safe and I look forward to reading or seeing how your Thanksgiving goes.
