Fall is just around the corner, which means it’s almost time for one of our favorite family traditions—visiting a pumpkin patch! 

Over the years, we’ve gone to several different ones including G&M Farms and Joan’s Farm & Pumpkin Patch, both in Livermore as well as Dell’Osso Family Farm in Lathrop and Fantozzi Farms in Patterson.  Last fall, we ventured off to Live Oak Canyon Pumpkin Farm in Redlands and it completely exceeded our expectations. From acres of pumpkins in every shape, size, and color to fun attractions like the Dragon Coaster, Bee Train, Pumpkin Blaster, hay forts, corn mazes, and so much more – there was no shortage of things to see and do. And, although we didn’t stop for a bite to eat during our visit, there were plenty of food vendors to choose from, along with a charming gift shop filled with pumpkin-themed books, keepsakes, toys, and all kinds of festive treasures. #yesplease

One of my favorite things about Live Oak Canyon Pumpkin Farm, though, was just how beautiful the entire property was. Everywhere we turned, there were gorgeous fall displays and picture-perfect backdrops that made my pumpkin-loving heart so happy.  We had such a wonderful day making memories together, and I’m excited to finally share some of my favorite photos from our visit. If you’re thinking about adding Live Oak Canyon Pumpkin Farm to your fall bucket list this year, I’ve also included a few simple tips to help you make the most of your trip.

Go Early

As with most pumpkin patches, it’s less crowded on weekdays.  But I know that can be difficult for families with school-age kids including ours.  So, instead, we like to get to the pumpkin patch as early as possible, and we go early in the morning during the weekend.  Not only do we beat the crowds to the most popular attractions, but temperatures are often quite a bit cooler in the morning which makes it a great time to get outside and also enjoy the weather.  

Dress Accordingly

Speaking of which, here in CA fall days can start off as cool and by mid-day the weather will change to warm.  It is definitely no fun to be out in the pumpkin patch when you or your little one is cold or vice versa.  So, having the right outfit makes all the difference, and layering is key! That said, there is a lot of walking involved and it goes without saying that having comfortable shoes on is also a must.  In my opinion, nothing beats a good pair of rain boots, or slip on shoes at the farm.  

Bring the Essentials

Along those lines, it’s important to remember that even in cooler temperatures, pumpkin patches are open fields and unless it’s overcast, the sun is out.  So, things like sunscreen, a hat, small snacks, and water are important to bring along.  Additionally, while more and more pumpkin patches accept credit cards, cash is still king! Sometimes life happens and machines breakdown. To limit disappointments or meltdowns, it’s always a great idea to have some cash.  

Use Their Photo Props

For us, one of the main reasons for heading to the pumpkin patch is to take cute photos. Between the pumpkin fields, the corn maze, and attractions, there are so many photo opportunities at the pumpkin patch to take advantage of.  And, much to my companions dismay, I certainly do! #theywillthankmelater Of course, my favorite photo prop is the patch’s measuring stick to take our annual photos.  It’s fun to look back at them to see how much my son has grown and changed each year.  

Put Away the Camera

Going off what I just talked about, don’t forget to put away the camera.  As someone obsessed with taking pictures, it’s easy to get carried away to capture all the things at a pumpkin patch.  After all, it’s so magical.  But at the end of the day, it’s also about creating memories and, in my opinion, the best ones often come from unexpected moments when there are no pictures involved. #theirony
