San Diego Travel Diary Part 2 – Oceanside

Today, I am back to wrap up my family’s adventures in San Diego.  In case you missed it, last month, I covered Part One, where I talked about where we stayed, what we did and what we ate in Valley Center.  This post is dedicated to our time in Oceanside.  So, grab your coffee and let’s dive in!

Day 4

Check-in at our new accommodations in Oceanside wasn’t available until 4 pm so we took our time getting out of Valley Center.  Once we were ready to say goodbye, we packed up the car and drove to Temecula to spend the remaining few hours there.  We had nowhere specific in mind to go, so we just wandered around. To our surprise, the city of Temecula is absolutely beautiful.  It’s clean, modern and laid back.  What’s more, there are lots of shops, cafes and wineries* to be explored.  Needless to say, we took advantage and visited two!

(*Side note: Though I may enjoy an occasional sip of wine, I am not a huge drinker.   For me, I go wine tasting because of the ambiance.  With that in mind, I won’t be able to go into detail about the wines.  However, if you do want more information on those in the future, let me know.  I can ask the hubby to share his thoughts.)

The first place we visited was Cougar Vineyards and it was a great start.  The atmosphere is incredibly easygoing.  Their patio is also the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a tasting which the hubby gladly did!

After that, we made our way to Robert Renzoni.  It is a nice place to enjoy wine with amazing view.  We could have sat there all day, but it was well past lunch time! We were all getting super hungry and the little guy a bit antsy.  Although, the winery had their very own kitchen that serves food, we chose to find a more kid-friendly place instead and decided on BJs.  It’s quick, easy and the perfect spot for a casual meal! Plus, their food selection was broad, and they had pretty much everything.

Once our tummies were satisfied, we made our way to our new lodging. This time we stayed at a 2-bedroom home. When we arrived at our new place, we were pleasantly surprised to see the set up!  The rooms were decorated with a coastal theme, and I fell in love with the aesthetic.  No detail was overlooked, and everything was picture-perfect! Additionally, our place also had a huge dining area, washer/dryer, a spacious backyard patio that had a grill and a play area for kids.  We definitely took advantage of the grill and made some yummy food while we were there.

That night, we hit the hay early.  All the driving had us exhausted and it was kind of nice to have a place that felt cozy and homely.

Day 5

The following morning, the hubby and little guy kicked off the day with a trip to the beach.  I, however, decided to stay behind to enjoy some peace and quiet.  I alternated between reading and enjoying the patio.

Then, once the boys were done with their beach shenanigans, we all got cleaned up and went on a little adventure before heading to dinner. Next on our agenda was to look for some murals because were you even in Oceanside if you didn’t get a picture in front of a mural?

We finished out the day by driving to Oceanside Harbor Village and eating dinner at Dominic’s Italian Restaurant. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the food was delicious. We ate outside and felt comfortable with the distance between us and other patrons.  We actually had the whole place to ourselves for the first half an hour or so until a few other families came.  Then, as for what we ordered, the hubby had the chicken piccata while the little guy had spaghetti and meatballs.  For my meal, I ordered the salmon.  It was delicious, light, and exactly what I was in the mood for.

Day 6

The next day, we decided to venture out and explore a bit.  The hubby wanted to go back to Temecula to see more of the area.  After visiting a few different properties, it was time for wine exploration!

Churon Inn Winery was the first one we visited.  From the actual vineyards to the tasting areas, this place is just stunning! Literally, everywhere you turn is a picturesque spot so even if you don’t do the tasting, I highly recommend you make a stop just for the view.  We decided to sit outside and enjoyed a signature tasting flight while soaking in our surroundings.  Afterwards, we were able to walk around and take photos around the property.

After strolling through Churon Winery, we ventured up the road to Callaway.  This place was beautiful and had amazing panoramic views of rolling vineyards.  It was also one of the larger wineries we visited so it was a bit more crowded.  However, people were spread out and maintained physical distance.  So, we were still able to enjoy ourselves and go about our business.

Speaking of, first things first, we were starving from not eating since breakfast that morning and needed fuel.  So, we visited the Meritage Restaurant before tasting.  Since we did not have a reservation, we ended up having to wait about a half hour for a table, but it was well worth the wait.  The restaurant is located right next to the winery and offers a great view of the surrounding vineyards.  Additionally, the menu had many great options to choose from, and it did not disappoint.  To start, we got the crab cakes which turned out to be huge and the hubby and I both agreed, one of the best we’ve ever had! For our meal, we ordered two of the Tropical Mahi-Mahi Tacos and the Roasted Chicken Pesto Sandwich to share amongst the three of us.  Oh, boy, did that hit the spot!

After stuffing our faces with lunch, the hubby was ready to get back to wine tasting! Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be and our visit to Callaway was cut short. The winery had a wedding scheduled later that evening and the tasting room was already closed.

From there, we tried to go to Miramonte Winery, but as it turns out wineries are only open until 5 pm and we just missed the cut off. So, we decided to call it a day and head back home.

Once we got back to the house, we all hopped into our PJs, grabbed our favorite snacks, and watched the sunset on the balcony.

Day 7

You can’t really go to San Diego and not spend some time at the beach.  So, for our last day, that’s exactly what we all did!

We went to Tamarack Beach in Carlsbad.  It is a quiet, family beach but big enough that you can go for a nice walk or separate yourself from the crowd.  Additionally, they have a pay lot for parking but it’s not really expensive.  You can pay by the hour or $10 for the whole day.  And don’t worry if you don’t have cash or coins, the machine takes cards!

Once we were on the beach, we found a quiet spot by the water to lay out a blanket.  We spent a blissful couple of hours here and our little guy loved every minute of it.   We brought sand toys and he used them to dig and build sandcastles.

After we got our fill of sand and sun, we decided to head back to the house for a late lunch.  We grilled some food and spent the remainder of the day just taking it easy.  In the morning, it will be time to say goodbye to Oceanside.

Wonderful photo diary, Maureen! I’m not a huge drinker either, in fact I don’t drink any alcohol, but I love visiting wineries. My dad is a retired wine maker and he used to take us to wineries all around the world and now I like to continue the tradition. Have a lovely day 🙂

Ah your trip looked so fun. I got to SF when I lived on the west coast (Seattle) but at one point I considered moving to San Diego for a job. It looks so nice there. That Air B-N-B looked amazing and the beaches too look like the beaches here. We have and Oceanside here too but not quite as nice as this lol. Great food too!

I am a big fan of staying in AirBnBs or homes because it gives you so much more flexibility as a family to cook, relax and enjoy the stay, as opposed to a hotel. It looks like your little man had a lot of fun in that yard!

I love going to wineries. I just love the open space, the wine, and the easy pace that I feel there. I also find it nice that children are allowed to join and there is always ample space for them to run around outdoors while the adults take in the views and the wine.

Big high-five to the hubby for taking the little man to the beach so you could relax just a little bit. That’s such a great way to give each other a little break.
