While there’s no shortage of costume ideas out there, finding a Halloween costume for kids isn’t always as easy as it sounds. So, with Halloween just around the corner, I wanted to share 11 simple costume ideas that my son has dressed up in over the years in case you are looking for some suggestions or recommendations. That way, all that is left to do is for your child to decide who or what they want to be. The best part, though, these Halloween costumes can work well with siblings as well as adults if you are like me and want to get in on the fun!
Let’s get right into it.
For truly something unique, it doesn’t get more timeless than this Elvis Presley costume. Not only is this one a serious attention-getter but no one can get the party started quite like the King of Rock N Roll!
I personally love this police officer costume. It is a simple go-to and will never go out of style. Of course, if you want to get the whole family involved, get the coordinating Jailbird adult costume.

If you live in a warmer area, this gladiator costume is a fun one. It isn’t too over-the-top but enough to turn some heads. It comes with everything you’ll need except for the shoes. And behind every great gladiator there is a great queen! So, why not grab the coordinating Roman empress costume and together, conquer the night.

It’s impossible to write a collective Halloween costume post without adding the Boo Express!
My son is obsessed with all things train. From the time he wakes up to the time he goes to sleep that is all he talks about. So, if your kid is like mine and have train on the brain, this is a great DIY option. It doesn’t take much but it really stands out and one you don’t see around.
If you love this theme, I have a whole blog post with how we made this DIY Train Engine Halloween Costume out of cardboard! But that’s not all, we also have a tutorial on how to make a coal car, if you or a sibling are joining in on the festive fun!
Or, if your child doesn’t want a costume inspired by a movie, TV or book character, dressing up as a United States President could be the way to go. Not only is it an easy and classic costume but also a fun way to do their history reports at school!
Speaking of which, another US President that would be easily recognizable is Franklin D. Roosevelt and this costume required little effort because my son had majority of the pieces in his closet. But even if you had to purchase these items, your child could reuse them again. In fact, it’s a great piece to have handy for dress up day at school, themed parties, or special occasions.
Few foods are as iconic as the hamburger, and my son and I are one of the many people who love it. Whenever we get the opportunity to eat a hamburger, we do it. You can read my DIY Hamburger Halloween Costume Tutorial for tips on how we made it, but it comes together easily with a few supplies. Complete the look with a black shirt, pants, and shoes from his closet.

It doesn’t get much easier than this Halloween costume and what I love about it is that there are plenty of opportunities to craft different props to add your own personal touch. Think feather headdress, bow & arrow, or necklace. And if that wasn’t enough, kids can wear it for their Friendship Feast or Thanksgiving Luncheon at school.
Lastly, there’s no going wrong with dressing up as the iconic and beloved creative director, Karl Lagerfeld. Not only is this outfit fuss free, but it’s so easy to recreate. In fact, it’s the same outfit my son is wearing as Franklin D. Roosevelt just with different accessories! This time, all you need to finish the look is a white wig, square sunglasses, fingerless gloves, and you are good to go!
Needless to say, if you love handbags as much as I do, don’t miss my DIY Chanel Boy Bag Halloween Costume Tutorial for a cute mommy & me fashionista moment.
