Portugal Travel Diary Part 3 – Lagos, Sagres & Olhos de Agua

Today, I am covering the final leg of our family trip in Portugal.  In this post, I’ll share highlights from our time in Lagos, Sagres & Olhos de Agua.  If you missed my previous posts, you can catch up and read them here:  Part 1: Lisbon, Sintra & Belem and Part 2: Porto.

After a first long week of exploring Lisbon and Porto, my family and I were all looking forward to a bit of relaxation.  Our third and final stop in Portugal was the southern coast known as the Algarve.  We spent 6 days in the Algarve, split between Lagos and Olhos de Agua.

The drive from Porto to Lagos took us approximately 5 hours and in order to get to Lagos, you would have to go back to Lisbon, so we made a pit stop at the Lisbon Freeport Outlets to break up our road trip.

Lisbon Freeport Outlets is a shopper’s dream come true and if I had my way, I would spend it shopping.  Unfortunately, neither the hubby or the little guy a big shopper so after a quick sugar and caffeine fix, we were back in the car and on our way to Lagos.

LAGOS

In Lagos, we stayed at the Belmar Spa & Beach Resort.  The apartment we booked was a 1-bedroom apartment that had a great living room space and an open kitchen.  It also had a dining area, washer/dryer and a balcony with an ocean view albeit from a distance. Additionally, the resort itself is in a great location – close to the beach and a quick drive away from town. Though to be honest, we didn’t make it out of the resort as much as we should.  With just three days in Lagos, we wanted to spend most of our time at a much slower pace and Belmar was the first place we had a chance to do that since we had arrived in Portugal.

After two days of taking it easy, we did venture out for dinner to Antonio’s Restaurante and had a lovely meal.  The restaurant overlooks Porto de Mos and you can’t beat dinner with a seaside view.  After dinner, we took photos and frolicked around the beach before heading back to our place for a nightcap.

On our last full day in Lagos, we aimed to get out and about.  We managed to visit two of the three beaches we wanted to see and to say the beaches are beautiful would be an understatement. The one we decided to visit first was Praia do Camilo.

Praia do Camilo/Praia da Dona Ana

Praia do Camilo is one of the popular beaches of Lagos.  It’s a small beach and can only be accessed by walking down 200+ wooden steps, but it really is worth the effort. It is surrounded by clear water, golden cliffs and spectacular rock formations that reminded me of the ones we saw in Thailand.  We arrived just before 11 am and it wasn’t too crowded yet but unfortunately, our stay at Praia do Camilo was cut short as the tide kept inching closer to where we were sitting.

Our next stop was Praia da Dona Ana.  It is located within a short walking distance from Praia do Camilo (though we drove) and it is a much larger beach.  We spent a blissful couple of hours here and our little guy loved every minute of it.  He spent some time paddling in the water and building sandcastles with the hubby while I found a nice space in the shade to sit in and enjoy the view.

This beach is a great place to get some much-needed R & R and coming from someone who isn’t a beach lover or sun worshipper, it was one of my favorite places that we visited in Portugal!

After our visit to the beach, we headed back to the resort and ate a late lunch at their on-site restaurant, Levante.  We spent the remainder of the day putting our feet up and just taking it easy.

The next morning, we slept in and had a lazy start to the day.  After a delicious breakfast at Belmar, we checked out of the resort and hopped into the car.  We were headed for the very end of Europe – the town of Sagres.  The drive took us about 30 minutes, and I have never experienced more roundabouts in my life!

SAGRES

Fortaleza de Sagres

During our visit to Sagres, we saw Fortaleza de Sagres.   The fort is large.  Inside there’s a small chapel, a wind compass, and a few cannons on display.  Other than that, there isn’t much to do there except take in the scenery.  It took us a good hour and a half at a leisurely pace from start to finish and it was also very windy when we went which gave us a nice break from the heat.

After experiencing and soaking up the atmosphere at Fortaleza Sagres, we were back on the road and on our way to Olhos de Agua.

OLHOS DE AGUA

Our second half of our Algarve vacation was spent at 3HB Clube Humbria in Olhos de Agua and this part of the trip was specifically for the little man.

3HB Clube Humbria is an all-inclusive resort catered to families.  Our 1-bedroom apartment was perfect and spacious.  It had a reasonable sized bedroom, living room and kitchen area.  We also had a balcony although it faced away from the pool with a land view but the view isn’t what we came here for.

What made this place magical was the amazing facilities they had for kids.  The resort itself had an awesome splash park complete with tipping water buckets, slides and a pool.  There is also a kid’s club with plenty of daytime activities as well as a playground with slides and a climbing frame.  If that’s not enough, there are evening entertainment including live music, shows and mini discos which was a hit with the little guy.  He had so much fun. In other words, this place is kiddie heaven!

Similarly, to Lagos, we didn’t leave the resort except for one night.  Since we were leaving Portugal the next day, we decided to get dressed up and have dinner outside of the resort. We drove to Albufeira and ate at Jaipur. Looking back, we probably should have spent some time there, but this was our son’s trip too.  He wanted to head back to the resort to keep playing and we happily obliged.

The next morning, we were up before sunrise and back on the road, headed to Lisbon International Airport bound for Greece.
