When it comes to holidays, we absolutely love Halloween. Besides all the cute decorations and yummy goodies, the best part of spooky season, in our opinion, is dressing up. In fact, ever since we started Mommy and Me themed costumes a few years ago, it has become a fun family tradition. We start talking, planning, and making our costumes months in advance. In the past, we dressed up as a Cop & Robber, as a Baker and Cupcake, as a Train Engine and Coal Car, and as a Hamburger and French Fries! Last year, we decided to be the iconic creative director, Karl Lagerfeld and a limited-edition Halloween Chanel Boy Bag!
But before I jump into the details of our costumes, I have to give a little back story of why we chose this theme. #storytime

So, I am not going to lie but we struggled with what we were going to be this year and if I am totally being honest, it wasn’t for the lack of ideas. Usually, when we plan out our mommy and me Halloween themed costumes, it always starts out with my son. We draw inspiration from toys, shows, and video games that he is currently obsessed with. But this time we went with a theme that is a little bit different. It’s been something I have wanted to dress up as for years and I thought this was the perfect year to do it for a couple of reasons.

The first is that my little bestie turned 10 in March, and it made me realize that our days of dressing up for Halloween is dwindling down. Put another way, next year, he’ll be starting middle school, and three years from that, he’ll officially be a teenager. A teenager. Let that sink in. #cuethepanic So, I know he won’t be on board with doing matching costumes forever and I didn’t know if this year is going to be the last one where he wants to dress up with me. It’s safe to say, I didn’t want to wait to find out! #patienceisnotoneofmyvirtues

Of course, we did what any Halloween costume loving duo would do and #discussed! I wrote down a list of a few different options of who we could be, what we could make, and looked at a bunch of pictures. After weeks of wavering back and forth between options, we decided on Karl Lagerfeld and a Chanel Boy Bag.

Secondly, in my opinion, a bag is more than just an accessory. Often, they carry a story. And just like a mother and son. Our relationship does too. So, when we chose to be Karl Lagerfeld and a Chanel Boy Bag it was because it resembled the way my son and I have crafted our connection with each other. So, much like how the Chanel Boy Bag’s design is characterized by an unparalleled level of craftsmanship to last for years to come, similarly, our bond is also a work of heart that is built on a strong foundation of friendship and unconditional love which we nurture daily. Thus, creating a tie that can endure life’s ups and downs. #thatsdeep

Now a little about our looks.
My son’s Karl Lagerfeld Halloween costume was seriously so simple and the key pieces for completing this look are a black suit, sunglasses, and white wig. Since he already had the two-piece suit set, black dress shoes, and the white button up shirt, I only needed to buy the fingerless gloves and wig. Because are you really Karl Lagerfeld without his iconic white hair? I think not! That said, if you need an easy boy’s Halloween costume idea, a Karl Lagerfeld costume is so fun and easy to pull off.

As for my Chanel Boy Bag Halloween costume, it was an easy DIY. Two weeks ago, I shared a how-to post on how we made a Chanel Boy Bag costume out of a cardboard box if you want the step by step. But to bring it all together, all I did was added a white wig, a red skirt for a fun pop of color, and white moto boots. I love how it bookends my costume and keep it modern and fresh. To top it off, I added a pair of fun pearl sunglasses to finish off the look.
What are you dressing up as this year? Are you dressing up for Halloween with your child or children?

The idea of matching costumes for parent and child is fun. You’re lucky to be able to do it. My son would be mortified, lol. He’s 18. Makes me laugh to think of it though.

Interesting and helpful breakdown of how you plan the “Mommy & Me” Halloween looks from start to finish, and how you chose this year’s theme with a mix of creativity and family meaning.

I love how you’ve turned the “Mommy & Me” costume tradition into such a meaningful moment, incorporating your son’s turning 10 and the realization that these moments are precious makes the post deeply heartfelt.
And the choice of dressing one of you as Karl Lagerfeld and the other as the iconic Chanel Boy Bag is so clever and chic, a fun, stylish way to capture both playfulness and your special bond.

This is definitely different than most costumes I’ve seen before! My younger son decided he is a “homemade robot” and made his costume from Boy Scout popcorn boxes and misc things he found in the garage. My older son is wearing his wizard robes again. We haven’t done a family or matching costumes since they were about 5 and 7 years old.

OMG, it’s not long now until Halloween and I’ve not even started looking at what I might wear when I take my son out trick or treating. I do love the idea of a Mummy and Me outfit. Hadn’t thought to do that before. You guys look awesome!!!! That’s such a fun way to go out on Halloween. Hope you guys have a really fun time xxx
